Bermondsey Street - Past and Present

Bermondsey Street is located 10 minutes from London Bridge Station. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Bermondsey Street area was known for its leather trade, especially the tanning process, and allied activities such as woolstapling, hat manufacture and glue production. By the end of the 19th century, Bermondsey Street had fallen into a state of decline as industries moved out of London. The street was perhaps then best known as the route to the Bermondsey Antiques market. The market was moved to Bermondsey Square, at the southern end of Bermondsey Street, from Caledonian Road in the 1950s and has operated ever since. Many antique dealers can be found operating shops and warehouses in the surrounding area, although there has been a marked decline in recent years.

Bermondsey Street has recently seen an upsurge in artistic and commercial activity. The street plays host to a number of bars, restaurants and art galleries, along with small offices, fashion boutiques, residential units and light industry. The eye-catching Fashion and Textile Museum, founded by Zandra Rhodes and now redeveloped and operated by Newham College, is situated at the heart of the area. There are also proposals for several boutique and aparthotels around Bermondsey Street and Bermondsey Square.
